Have you ever wondered if you might have unclaimed or forgotten mutual fund investments lying dormant somewhere? MITRA is here to help.

What is MITRA?

MITRA (Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant) is a SEBI-backed initiative developed by Registrar and Transfer Agents (RTAs). It serves as a centralised platform where investors, nominees, or legal heirs can check whether they have any unclaimed or forgotten mutual fund holdings.

This initiative aims to simplify the process of tracing such investments and ensure that rightful owners or their heirs can easily access them.

How Does MITRA Empower Investors?

Inactive or unclaimed folios can sometimes become vulnerable to fraud. MITRA addresses this by helping investors locate and retrieve inactive or forgotten mutual fund holdings through a secure, transparent process. Here’s how it benefits you:

  1. Identify Unclaimed Investments: MITRA enables investors to discover overlooked or forgotten investments — even those made by someone else — where they might be the rightful legal claimant.
  2. Update KYC Details: If your folios are not KYC compliant, MITRA creates awareness and allows you to update your KYC as per current norms.
  3. Reduce Fraud Risk: By helping investors trace and retrieve unclaimed folios, MITRA minimizes the risk of fraudulent redemptions.
  4. Enhance Transparency: The platform contributes to a more transparent and efficient financial ecosystem, offering investors a reliable way to track their investments.

What is an Inactive Folio?

An inactive folio refers to a mutual fund folio where no investor-initiated transaction — financial or non-financial — has taken place in the last 10 years, even though there is a balance of units available.

This may include folios where you’ve chosen to remain invested (without redeeming) in an open-ended scheme. If you’re aware of these investments and your KYC details are updated, there’s no cause for concern. The objective of the platform is to encourage the investors to search for forgotten MF investments and update KYC as per the current norms.

Folios can become inactive for several reasons:

  • The investor may have simply forgotten about the investment.
  • Outdated contact details — such as PAN, email ID, or address — may prevent statements from reaching them.
  • The investment might have been made by a family member who is no longer around, and the legal heirs may be unaware of it.

MITRA’s objective is simply to help investors find and keep track of their forgotten mutual fund investments and bring greater visibility to their financial assets.
